COVID Update 1/21/2022 – Letters from Mr. Thielman

January 21, 2022

Dear Alsea Parents and Community,

On January 13th, 2022 the Alsea School Board voted unanimously to approve Resolution 01-13-2022, which declares an “effective return of local Health and Safety Decision-Making” commensurate with Governor Brown’s June 25, 2021 recovery order.  Further, the Resolution directs the Alsea Superintendent and Administration to balance changing Health and Safety Guidance with the negative impacts that some COVID mitigation’s have had on student learning.
In light of this directive I am implementing the following changes to our current COVID safety plan:
1) MASKING:  Beginning Monday, January 24th, 2022 EXCEPT FOR WHEN RIDING ON THE BUS, the determinant authority regarding the need to wear a mask will be returned to individual parents, staff, and students.
*This means parents must decide if they wish for their child to be masked when at school, both inside or outside. If you decide that you want your child to wear a mask they will be fully supported, to include provision of masks free of charge by the Alsea School District.
**If the decision is that there is no need or concern for your child to mask, then they will be free to engage in indoor and outdoor learning  without a face covering
*** The  BUS EXCEPTION pertains to the Federal requirement for masking policy on public transportation, which will remain in force for the time being.
2) The right of any student, staff, or person to individually choose to mask WILL BE RESPECTED. There will be zero tolerance for any mask shaming moving forward. Omicron is still prevalent and each individual must make their own decision as how to best manage their perceived risks based on their own assessment. Go Wolverines!!!
3) Other mitigations will continue unchanged to include daily sanitation, social distancing, hand washing, lunch protocols, etc.
In conclusion, I wish to thank our school board for giving their unanimous consent in support of Resolution 01-13-2022.  I believe it will serve our school climate well by restoring confidence, reducing unhealthy mask conflict, and restoring respect for individual decision making without fear of reprisal.
We are blessed to live and work in Alsea and I look forward to seeing so many real faces again on Monday.
