On Thursday October 20, Alsea School will join over 500,000 other folks in Oregon for the Great Oregon Shakeout, which is part of the global Great Shakeout, an earthquake safety drill that includes over 40,000,000 participants. Scientists have predicted a major earthquake event sometime in the next 50 years along the Cascadia Subduction Zone off of the coast of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. The recent 4.4 earthquake in nearby Sweet Home, Oregon makes this important safety drill even more timely. This drill will increase awareness off safety procedures and protocols for staff and students while having fun participating in the drill. In preparation for the drill, Alsea students of all ages have been learning this week about earth science, seismology, earthquakes, and the importance of tsunami awareness if there should be an earthquake while one is visiting the Oregon Coast.
